COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS AND REPORT 1979-2001
The University of Michigan Health Management Research Center has produced the Cost Benefit Analysis and Report 1979-2001. This report reviewed more than 500 articles and studies about the cost effectiveness of health promotion programs over the past twenty years. The basic findings were that money spent on keeping the workforce healthy was money very well spent. Greater cost savings were achieved by year round programs. Most of the programs cited savings to cost ratios of over 3 dollars saved for each dollar invested. Documented savings were observed in medical costs, reduced absenteeism, worker's comp costs, short-term disability, and increased productivity. The report noted that wellness programs had to be in place for at least one year for risk reduction and cost benefits to be realized.
